The mantra of the 60s and 70s transformed into a themed event

The mantra of the 60s and 70s was transformed into the theme for a fun-filled series of events at Friendship Village in Schaumburg. Over the course of several weeks, the senior living community hosted floral demonstrations, t-shirt decorating, movies, arts and craft projects, outings, and more…. all reflecting the theme of Flower Power. “The residents like themed programming. Themes charge the inner spirit and awaken creativity. There is an excitement that builds, and you can feel the motivation behind it,” said Donna Brown, lifestyles activities manager for Friendship Village.

The activity committee, run by residents and overseen by Donna planned the events.  “I ‘planted’ the idea and the activities committee took it and ran with it,” said Donna. Flower Power culminated on Tuesday with an exhibit of residents’ flower memorabilia and crafts, refreshments, games, drawings, floral manicures and face-painting, and a musical performance by The Gardeners and the Flower Pots (aka the Friendship Village Choir).

“This type of event is great because the residents get the opportunity, not only to observe, but also to interact with each other,” said Donna.
