His artistic journey began when he was in first grade. This is evidenced by his inaugural masterpiece, matted and framed in his exhibition along with his religious icons, nature watercolors and more. Since that time 50+ years ago, Chaplain Shawn Kafader of Friendship Village retirement community has kept both music and art as important parts of his life. Shawn’s artwork is presently on display at Friendship Village in Schaumburg.
Shawn graduated from Eastman School of Music in Rochester with a degree in opera performance and music education. He then entered the seminary and earned his doctorate in divinity, before going on to earn his master’s degree in clinical counseling. Shawn has served as the chaplain of Friendship Village since 2005.
“I have continued to create art on and off through the years, but I’ve really increased that over the past few years. Art is my spirituality. It’s time when I can be alone and can meditate and be refreshed and renewed,” he said. Shawn initiated art therapy and counseling internships at Friendship Village several years ago.
Shawn said that he is pleased to have his artwork on display at the retirement community, and that he’s received rave reviews from the residents who enjoy seeing the artistic side of their beloved chaplain.
