Commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9-11
The event concluded as attendees joined hands.

On Friday, September 9th, Friendship Village hosted a special event commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9-11, and memorializing those who gave their lives. The memorial drew more than 200 people including residents of Friendship Village, Illinois State Representatives, Schaumburg Village Trustees, and representatives from the police and fire departmentsand military.

The ceremony began with prayers led by Chaplain Shawn Kafader, remembering the victims of 9-11 and their families. Four garden benches were dedicated in honor of the police and fire departments, the National Guard, and armed services. These were carried outside by members of the respective groups being honored, and were placed in the Meditation Garden of Friendship Village.

The event concluded as attendees joined hands, forming a human chain across a 1000 foot expanse of Friendship Village. The words “peace be with you” were passed one-by-one down the line. There were spontaneous bursts of patriotic songs sung by people forming the chain.

“It is important to recognize the efforts of those who try to make the world a better place. This observance allows us the opportunity to reflect on our community, country and world, and come together in a show of peace and unity. We also want to show our appreciation for anyone who has ever, or will ever put others before themselves,” said Michael McCann, director of Lifestyles at Friendship Village.
